I've just bought a Kinect system for Windows I'm using Windows 10 just to have a play around the Kinect 2 is rather more expensive and I'd need a silly expensive adapter. I'm running Windows 10 and have the 1. Now, what exactly can I do with it?
I can't find any software that works with it everything for Windows 10 seems to require the Kinect 2 and it won't even function as a webcam. I've found a few utilities out there, but they seem to depend on 3rd part drivers and not the official Microsoft ones; have I wasted my money? This thread is locked. Jay's post on July 17, Thank you for your response. If you are using Windows 10, you can only use Kinect for Xbox One with early drivers installed on your computer. For consumer, Kinect for Windows is only used for facial recognition through Windows Hello.

Windows 10 pics up the mic and I can record sound etc. But it does not detect a camera. The camera app, skype, zoom etc do not detect anything. I have spent the last couple of evenings trying to get this to work to no avail.
I have searched far and wide on these forums and reddit and tried several potential solutions but none have worked.
It is frustrating because I can get a picture it just seems like some stupid setting is stopping this from happening. I have managed to get it to work with skype using the details in this forum however it doesn't work with MS teams etc. Reply 1 person was helped by this reply. Did this solve your problem? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. This is thee only video where i have had success in completing my build.
Hope it helps!!! So the video Jeff posted above got me so far do all the bits she suggests. The big bit though that helped is this guy's how-to:. At time of writing I have the Kinect recognised as my camera and mic in Zoom. It should also work in Skype and some other platforms, but not Teams as far as I can tell.
Then using a plugin called Virtual Cam which apparently should work with Skype So I'm pretty much where OP is. It's been a world of pain! This seems down to the fact that it appears in the Device Manager as a seperate device and not in the camera section. I don't know how or if you can change that.
I read one blog that stated SDK1. Site Feedback. Tell us about your experience with our site.Kinect codenamed Project Natal during development is a line of motion sensing input devices produced by Microsoft and first released in The technology includes a set of hardware originally developed by PrimeSenseincorporating RGB cameras, infrared projectors and detectors that mapped depth through either structured light or time of flight calculations, and a microphone array, along with software and artificial intelligence from Microsoft to allow the device to perform real-time gesture recognitionspeech recognition and body skeletal detection for up to four people, among other capabilities.
This enables Kinect to be used as a hands-free natural user interface device to interact with a computer system. Kinect is a peripheral that sits atop the user's display similar to a webcam. Kinect originated as a means to eliminate the game controller from Microsoft's Xbox video game hardware, competing with the Nintendo Wii 's own motion-sensing capabilities, hoping to draw a larger audience beyond traditional video game players to the Xbox.
Kinect first launched as an add-on for the Xbox in Novemberand within a few months more than 10 million units had been sold, making it one of the fastest-selling computer hardware products at the time.

However, video games had to be developed to specifically incorporate the Kinect's features, and the bulk of games released with Kinect support were family-friendly titles. As Microsoft developed the successor console, the Xbox Onethe company had planned to make the second generation of Kinect hardware a required component of the console, giving a reason for developers to seek to take advantage of it.
However, the forced inclusion of Kinect raised concerns related to privacy, and among other major changes, Microsoft eventually eliminated the requirement for Kinect to be always connected to the Xbox One, though still bundled Kinect with the console on its release in November A market for Kinect-based games still did not emerge after the Xbox One's launch, and Microsoft eventually eliminated the Kinect from the Xbox One bundles, while later hardware revisions eliminated the Kinect-specific ports on the console, requiring a special USB adapter instead.
ByMicrosoft had discontinued all Kinect hardware for video games. However, Kinect had found an unexpected home for Microsoft in academics and commercial applications, as the Kinect sensor, at the time, was cheaper and more robust compared to other depth-sensing technology applications.
Microsoft now considers non-gaming applications, such as in robotics, medicine, and health care, the primary market for Kinect. Shortly after the November release, users were able to hack into the Kinect and develop hardware drivers and software interfaces to be used on Microsoft Windows personal computers and other systems.
Microsoft, after initially objecting to the potential security issues raised by these hacks, changed course and endorsed these efforts, and released its own software development kit for non-commercial applications. The company later rebranded the Kinect hardware into Kinect for Windows inallowing for commercial applications. A second-generation Kinect for Windows, based on the Xbox One unit, was released inthough Microsoft ultimately terminated this line and directed users to use the Xbox One Kinect as it was functionally equivalent.
Following the discontinuation of the Xbox line of Kinect sensors, Microsoft released a non-gaming version as the Azure Kinectwhich incorporates Microsoft Azure cloud computing applications among the device's functionalities. Part of the Kinect technology was also used within Microsoft's Hololens project. The origins of the Kinect started aroundat a point where technology vendors were starting to develop depth-sensing cameras.
Microsoft had been interested in a 3D camera for the Xbox line earlier but because the technology had not been refined, had placed it in the "Boneyard", a collection of possible technology they could not immediately work on. InPrimeSense was founded by tech-savvy mathematicians and engineers from Israel to develop the "next big thing" for video games, incorporating cameras that were capable of mapping a human body in front of them and sensing hand motions.
They showed off their system at the Game Developers Conferencewhere Microsoft's Alex Kipman, the general manager of hardware incubation, saw the potential in PrimeSense's technology for the Xbox system.

Microsoft began discussions with PrimeSense about what would need to be done to make their product more consumer-friendly: not only improvements in the capabilities of depth-sensing cameras, but a reduction in size and cost, and a means to manufacturer the units at scale was required.
PrimeSense spent the next few years working at these improvements. We will be initiating the Kinect, retrieving skeleton data to get joint coordinates, and then using these coordinates to determine if your left or right hand is raised. This is just a hello world but you can use the same principles for more advanced projects with the SDK. I will try and upload some of mine if the swine that is time is on my side In this tutorial I am using the Kinect for Windows, this Kinect has the model number this means it is the Windows version and thus can be used for commercial use and sadly doesn't work with other OS's.
You may have the Xbox version modelsand these should also work. You can get them from these links:. You will also need Visual Studio for this Instructable, head over and download the VS Community edition, its free and packed with so many features it will make your mind boggle! The downloads may take some time but all should be okay!
We also want to add Microsoft. Toolkit, Microsoft. Controls, and Microsoft. Your path for the references may vary to mine depending on where you installed the Kinect SDK and Development Kit but they hopefully shouldn't be too hard to find. We can now start coding! Here is the whole XAML code for you to look at and think, I will then go through how its done and what each line does. You can either drag and drop items from the toolbar which will automatically generate the code or just type the code in yourself.
I have also created a label where the content changes depending on the current status of the Kinect. When the Kinect is connected it will say "Connected". These will have the current coordinate values for both wrists and also their state, whether they are raised or lowered.
Then when the window loads we are going to start the Kinect Chooser to get the Status of the kinect. The the label is updated by KinectSensorChooserKinectChanged, due to the switch we create in this function.
Here also the Skeleton is initialised. Enable ; sensor. Once we a tracking the Skeleton we can look for the X,Y and Z coordinates for specific points on the skeleton.
In this example we are after the coordinates of the hands of the user. We show the values as text in the window in our textblocks. We then compare the Z position of the users hip to the Z position of their hand.
If it is over a certain threshold we are going to treat the users arm as being 'raised' and therefore print to the window which arm is up.Looking for help to work remotely?
